1960s Javanese Batik

My in-laws spent the mid-1960s to early 1970s in medical service on the
Indonesian island of Java. My mother-in-law returned to the US with a
collection of high-quality batik. A few days before leaving Virginia, I
spent a few hours scanning sections of some of her collection. I wish I
could scan the entire cloth so you could get the full effect. What you see
here are the small sections that fit on a standard 8.5×11 scanner.

Enjoy!

Escapism, a theme that first cropped up in Pantone’s most popular color schemes last year, is still going strong for spring. To try to help consumers forget their cares, designers tapped into hues often seen in Africa, India, Peru and Turkey. Honeysuckle topped the charts for the season’s leading color for women, followed by Regatta, Coral Rose and Beeswax. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said, “This time, everything is a little more exotic. It really has to do with everything that is happening in the world. There is still a lot of concern about the economy and life in general. It is very natural that designers would have those things in their thought process as they choose their colors.”

    Architectural Portraits

I realized the other day that my web site needed serious updating. In
reviewing my past work I felt I had enough architectural subjects to create
    a special page for them.

As a set designer I get a particular kick out of opportunities to render
buildings in their environment. This collection includes pencil drawings,
small and large paintings on canvas and murals. Subjects range from
vacation villas, old mills and family homesteads to office buildings.

    Enjoy!

We Sold Our House This Week

With mixed feelings I mopped my way out the kitchen door last Sunday. Had a
brief cry in the driveway and said good-bye. I can only hope the new buyers
have an ounce of recognition of what we put into this place. If we ever
build our dream home, much of the character will be taken from this little
gem. Hard to believe we were there for 6.5 years. I am looking forward to
what’s next. And especially the plan to live in the same town as my sweet
    husband!

I’m going to load pictures of Before and After. Hopefully they will load in
    the right order for comparison.

    Still Catching Up: Free-hand Scrollwork

This winter has been crazy. Mid-February we got a decent offer on our house
so I started the final push to move home life, studio and office. Home is
hard enough but studio and office while trying to keep working has been
seriously no fun. Here are a couple shots of a project I managed to squeeze
out. I can’t even remember when it was now.

This is an all-over effect on a good-sized powder room. I also did some
Venetian plaster with huge embedded stencils in the great room. I will be
returning to the house for another project next week so I hope to get shots
of the great room while there.

    Oh Where Have I Been?

    Dear Long-Neglected Blog,

I know I have neglected you for over a month but I promise I have many good
excuses. Attached is evidence of at least one of my recent diversions. I
will soon write a full report of my activities and promise to be more
    faithful in the future.
